Chrysler is creating inspiration in the common car, introducing the 2007 Chrysler Sebring. An all-new mid-size sedan, Chrysler Sebring builds on the winning formula begun with the award-winning Chrysler 300 in the large car segment, and more recently, the all-new 2007 Dodge Caliber in the compact car segment. This formula combines stunning design with interior craftsmanship, high-levels of safety and reliability, exhilarating performance and excellent fuel efficiency, all at a surprisingly affordable price. Sebring also features many class-leading technologies not available in the mid-size segment.
“The all-new 2007 Chrysler Sebring sustains the momentum started by the blockbuster hit Chrysler 300 and continued with the Dodge Caliber,” said George Murphy, Senior Vice President – Global Marketing. “Just as the 300 redefined the large-car segment and signaled the return of the great American car, Chrysler Sebring combines the levels of reliability and durability that mid-size buyers demand with unexpected levels of style, craftsmanship, technology and affordable performance.”
The 2007 Chrysler Sebring appeals to buyers who appreciate style, practicality, safety and value. Sebring’s elegant and sophisticated design, packaged with interior craftsmanship, exciting new technologies and class-leading safety features, meet the needs of their busy lives.
The 2007 Chrysler Sebring will be available in U.S. dealerships in the fourth quarter of 2006 and in global volume markets in the first half of 2007.
Strikingly Beautiful Design
Inspired by the 2003 Chrysler Airflite concept vehicle that was revealed at the Geneva motor show, the all-new Chrysler Sebring’s elegant lines evoke the exterior styling features of the Chrysler vehicle, bringing the Chrysler brand’s expressive design attributes to the mid-size segment.
“Sleek and sophisticated, the Chrysler Sebring’s overall surfacing and details reflect the Chrysler brand’s four attributes: expressive, refined, athletic and passionate,” said Trevor Creed, Senior Vice President – Design. “Sebring’s elegant styling provides a clear alternative to European and Japanese competition.”
From the front, the Chrysler Sebring sedan features the distinctive face of the Chrysler brand, with the Chrysler signature grille, a uniquely sculptured hood, large, distinctive quad headlamps and available fog lamps.
A long hood profile, chrome beltline molding and long roofline emulate a five-door appearance. High-gloss blackouts on the B-pillars enhance the length of the Sebring’s greenhouse. Sculptured character lines running along the body accentuate Sebring’s athletic stance.
The expressive character of the vehicle continues at the rear where Sebring’s wide tail-lamps are integrated into both the rear quarters and extend into the deck lid for visual impact. Rear fog lamps mounted in the backup lamps maintain a uniform appearance between domestic and export vehicles. Chrysler Sebring Limited models for the U.S. market add chrome-tipped dual exhaust outlets to hint at the performance capability of the optional 3.5-liter V6 engine.
World-class Craftsmanship
The elegance found in Sebring’s exterior styling also runs through the vehicle’s interior, which features a modern, clean appearance with intense focus on quality, detail and execution.
“Chrysler Sebring’s interior takes a different direction from many of the current mid-size sedans on the road. Its form is inspired by the Chrysler uplifted winged badge motif and incorporates new and fresh decorative elements,” Creed added.
Sebring’s finely crafted interior features soft surfaces, mechanical grains and selective gloss levels on the interior surfaces.
From the driver’s seat, Sebring’s H-point is 2.54 inches (64.6 mm) higher than the vehicle it replaces, giving drivers a command-of-the-road seating position. Standard 60/40 fold-flat rear seats make room for more gear, and an available fold-flat passenger seat creates a table-like surface to enhance the versatility of Sebring’s interior.
All Chrysler Sebring models feature a two-tone interior color theme of dark and lighter shades of Pastel Slate Gray or Pastel Pebble Beige, which provides a spacious and well-appointed look. The Chrysler Sebring Limited model also features an exclusive two-tone Cream and Pebble Beige interior with leather seats. The Chrysler Sebring Limited’s available upscale accent materials and finishes include Tortoise Shell, Satin Silver, Alloy Silver and Chrome.
Purposeful Technology that Makes Life Easier and Safer
In addition to Sebring’s upscale design and elegant use of materials, this all-new sedan brings new levels of function and technology to the U.S. mid-size car segment.
“Chrysler Sebring features a slew of new technologies not typically found or expected in a mid-size car,” said David Rooney, Director – Chrysler Marketing and Global Communications. “These features make life easier and safer for the driver and passengers, while making the overall driving experience much more enjoyable for all.”
The 2007 Chrysler Sebring features a cutting-edge Harmon/Kardon information, entertainment and safety navigation audio system that raises the bar on in-vehicle communications. Exhilarating Performance with Excellent Fuel Efficiency
Three engine options power the 2007 Chrysler Sebring sold in the United States: the new 2.4-liter four-cylinder World Engine, a 2.7-liter V-6 engine and an available 3.5-liter V-6 engine coupled with a new six-speed automatic transaxle with Auto Stick that provides 0-60 mph performance to rival the best in the mid-size-car class.
Sebring’s standard 2.4-liter World Engine with dual variable valve timing (VVT) rivals all four-cylinder engines in the mid-size-car segment with its combination of fuel economy and solid performance. Mated to a four-speed automatic transaxle, this new engine provides a 13 percent increase in horsepower (172 horsepower vs. 150 horsepower) and 4 percent improvement in fuel economy compared with the 2.4-liter engine it replaces.
An available, enhanced 2.7-liter V-6 engine provides value- and performance-conscious consumers the power of a V-6 engine with a price that compares with the competitions’ four-cylinder engines. Chrysler Sebring's available 2.7-liter V-6 engine produces 190 horsepower and 190 lb.-ft. of torque, providing more low-end torque (at an rpm 850 lower) compared with the 2.7-liter engine it replaces.
Chrysler Sebring sedans sold in the United States are also available with 3.5-liter V-6 engines that produce 235 horsepower and 232 lb.-ft. of torque coupled with a new six-speed automatic transaxle that comes standard with Auto Stick. The combination of the upgraded 3.5L V6 engine and six-speed automatic transaxle delivers excellent performance and fuel efficiency, as well as quiet operation.
The 2007 Chrysler Sebring is one of the first Chrysler Group vehicles to offer the new six-speed automatic transaxle, which provides quicker standing-start acceleration than a four- or five-speed transaxle because of its numerically higher first gear ratio. A more robust differential with increased torque capacity enhances launch performance by requiring less torque management, electronically limiting the torque that is available during the initial stages of standing-start acceleration. Smaller steps between ratios also make for a smoother, quieter ride, as the engine speed doesn’t change as often with each shift. In addition, more ratio choices, more appropriate ratios for quicker acceleration and a lower overall top gear ratio provide a quieter ride and improved fuel economy at highway speeds.
“The all-new 2007 Chrysler Sebring's performance is extremely competitive with the best in its class,” said Larry Lyons, Vice President – Front-wheel-drive Product Team. “Based on 0-60 mph acceleration tests, the Sebring Limited's performance, with its new 3.5-liter V-6 engine and six-speed automatic transaxle, rivals the leaders in the mid-size class.”
For the first time in the mid-size car segment, the Chrysler Group also will offer a state-of-the-art 2.0-liter turbo diesel engine on the Chrysler Sebring for key diesel markets outside North America. The diesel engine will deliver excellent performance and fuel economy, with an estimated 140 horsepower DIN (103 kW) and 236 lb.-ft. (320 N•m) of torque.
Elevating Expectations
In the United States, Chrysler Sebring is designed to appeal to 35-55 year-old buyers who are married and have a median income of approximately $65,000. Fifty-five percent are female, and 60 percent are college educated. Many have small families with one or two children. These mid-size car buyers are down-to-earth and conservative, yet open-minded, self-confident and have a passion for life. Middle and upper-middle class, their lives are active, and they have a true sense of style. Their self image is grounded in their accomplishments and future prospects. Chryslers Sebring’s elegant and sophisticated design, packaged with interior craftsmanship and essential levels of reliability, meets the needs of customers who want more than just practicality in this competitive segment.
Chrysler Sebring Model Lineup
The 2007 Chrysler Sebring is available in the United States in three models: Chrysler Sebring, Chrysler Sebring Touring and Chrysler Sebring Limited.
2007 Chrysler Sebring Production
Production of the 2007 Chrysler Sebring begins in the third quarter of 2006 at the newly refurbished Sterling Heights Assembly Plant in Sterling Heights, Mich. The new 2.4-liter four-cylinder World Engine for this vehicle is built in the state-of-the art Global Engine Manufacturing Alliance (GEMA) plant in Dundee, Mich. The 2.7-liter V-6 engine and the 3.5-liter V-6 engines are built at the Kenosha Engine Plant in Kenosha, Wisconsin.
Chrysler Brand
Driven by award-winning new models, the Chrysler brand has seen a dramatic increase in sales, market share and brand image, culminating in 2005 calendar year sales of 649,293 units – an all-time sales record. Since 1990, Chrysler brand sales have jumped 251 percent.
No other American automotive brand has grown as much during the same time frame.
“The Chrysler brand's succession of innovative product introductions continues to solidify the brand's standing as the leader in great design, purposeful technology and value,” said David Rooney, Director – Chrysler Marketing and Global Communications. “With the launch of the all-new 2007 Chrysler Sebring sedan and the 2007 Chrysler Aspen — the first-ever full-size SUV for the brand – the momentum is sure to continue,” he added.
Global Engine Manufacturing Alliance (GEMA)
The World Engine is a family of world-class four-cylinder engines produced by GEMA in Dundee, Mich., delivering an exceptional combination of quality, fuel efficiency, refinement and performance. GEMA is owned equally by DaimlerChrysler Corp., Mitsubishi Motors Corp. and Hyundai Motor Company. By optimizing the three joint venture partners’ strengths, global economies of scale and the latest practices in flexible teams and machines, GEMA aims to set a new benchmark in engine plant productivity.

Chrysler Introduces High-performance 300C SRT8 Touring to Its International Lineup (Outside North America)
- Chrysler 300C SRT8 Touring powered by new 6.1-litre HEMI® V-8 engine to 425 horsepower (317 kW)
- Power — 25 percent more — builds momentum for Chrysler 300C and HEMI® engine
Exactly a year since the Chrysler Group introduced the 425-horsepower (317 kW) Chrysler 300C SRT8 for Europe and other markets outside of North America at the 2005 Geneva Show, the Chrysler Group has confirmed that the versatile 300C Touring wagon will also be available as a high-performance SRT model.
Like the sedan, the new high-performance rear-wheel drive version of the already popular Chrysler 300C Touring arrives in international showrooms in the second half of 2006 and will be available in both left- and right-hand drive.
"The HEMI® is a critical ingredient to the success of the Chrysler 300C," said Dan Knott, Director – Street and Racing Technology (SRT), Chrysler Group. "With the two new Chrysler 300C SRT8 models, we are now adding even more horsepower to the HEMI® and even more performance to this charismatic Chrysler."
The Chrysler 300C SRT8 Touring will be as sensational a drive as the sedan and the preliminary performance target is 0-100 km/h in the low five-sec. range. Top speed will be electronically limited to 270 km/h (168 mph).
"With the Chrysler 300C SRT8 Touring, we're delivering the ultimate performance wagon," said Thomas Hausch, Executive Director, International Sales and Marketing. "With its world-class handling, benchmark braking, functional exterior enhancements, race-inspired interior appointments, versatile cabin and load space and a jaw-dropping 425 horsepower (317 kW), we're sure this new model will capture driving enthusiasts in Europe and other international markets when it goes on sale later this year."
Hausch concluded, "The 300C family provides a unique proposition to European buyers by delivering expressive Chrysler design and, in SRT8 form, immense power – coupled with exceptional cargo volumes, thoughtful features like our unique access rear liftgate on the wagon, premium appointments and state-of-the-art technology."
Powertrain
The 317 kW (425 hp), normally aspirated 6.1-litre HEMI® engine is the highest specific-output engine ever offered by the Chrysler Group. Its 52.05 kW-per-litre rating exceeds even that of the legendary 1966 `Street HEMI.' Torque is rated at 569 N•m (420 lb.-ft.) at 4800 rpm.
Although the Chrysler HEMI® was born in the 1950s and entered into legend in the 1960s and '70s, today's version took much of its inspiration from the original – particularly the namesake hemispherical combustion chambers that provide power and efficiency.
When Chrysler Group's Street and Racing Team (SRT) set out to develop a more powerful HEMI® for the Chrysler 300C SRT8, they were mindful of the engine's heritage, which led to adopting traditional HEMI® engine cues such as an orange painted cylinder block and black valve covers.
The SRT powertrain engineers who developed the Chrysler 300C SRT8 Touring's engine achieved more horsepower by adding increasing capacity, increasing the compression ratio, redesigning the cylinder head intake and exhaust systems for increased flow, and increasing engine speed.
To get more displacement, SRT engineers bored out the diameter of the cylinders in the Chrysler 300C SRT8's HEMI® by 3.5 mm each, to increase the total displacement to 6.1-litres from 5.7-litres. Compression ratio was also increased to 10.3:1 from 9.6:1, unleashing more energy in the combustion process.
Engine breathing was increased with new high-flow cylinder heads, a specially designed intake manifold, and exhaust `headers' with individual tubes encased in a stainless steel shell, all unique to the new SRT8's 6.1-litre HEMI® engine. Larger diameter valves and reshaped cylinder ports in the heads allow for maximized air flow. The intake manifold was designed with larger diameter runners for higher-speed tuning. Exhaust is routed through a larger-diameter 70 mm (2.75 in.) exhaust system (up by 10 percent) with 90 mm (3.5 in.) chrome tail pipes.
Performance-oriented camshaft profiles were developed to balance total vehicle requirements, simultaneously allowing more air in and out of cylinders. This increases performance and manages a higher engine speed, which is another method to increase horsepower. SRT engineers increased the HEMI®'s peak engine speed to 5800 rpm from 5400 rpm. Intake and exhaust valve stems are hollow, and the exhaust valve stems are filled with sodium to help dissipate heat more efficiently.
The high-performance 6.1-litre HEMI® is further strengthened with a host of redesigned components, including a reinforced engine block with increased coolant flow, forged steel crankshaft, high-strength powdered-metal connecting rods, floating-pin pistons (cooled by oil squirters), and a sump modified to ensure reduced oil foaming.
In the 300C SRT8 Touring, the 6.1-litre HEMI®'s power is channeled through an W5A580 five-speed automatic transmission with specially calibrated AutoStick® driver-selectable range control, which offers fully automatic or sequential manual gear shifting. A heavy-duty four-flange prop shaft sends the torque from the transmission to an upgraded rear differential and axle.
Ride and Handling
The Chrysler 300C SRT8 Touring's suspension and chassis are tuned for outstanding ride and handling across the broadest dynamic range that customers are likely to experience.
Chassis setup for the Chrysler 300C SRT8 Touring is aimed at all-round performance with a number of enhancements, including tuned Bilstein dampers, specially tailored spring rates and suspension bushings and larger-diameter anti-roll bars. New front and rear suspension knuckles contribute to a ride height lowered 13 mm (0.5 in.) compared to the regular model. And, the Electronic Stability Programme (ESP) has been specially tuned for the SRT8's performance handling characteristics.
The Chrysler 300C SRT8 Touring connects with the road via a new wheel and tyre assembly consisting of 20-inch aluminium SRT performance wheels.
Braking performance goes hand-in-hand with the new Chrysler 300C SRT8 Touring's outstanding accelerating and speed — and the braking system was specially designed to slow and stop the car safely, predictably and with maximum stability. At the same time, this system was designed to provide benchmark braking performance, setting a new standard for wagons in its class.
Within each of the large diameter 20-inch wheels are high performance brake calipers developed by Brembo — well known in racing and high-performance circles — equipped with four pistons for unrivalled stopping performance. Up front, the Chrysler 300C SRT8 Touring has 360 mm x 32 mm ventilated discs, with 350 mm x 28 mm ventilated discs at the rear.
Design and Amenities
Befitting its high-performance character, the new Chrysler 300C SRT8 Touring exterior styling is a sophisticated treatment that resonates with the Chrysler brand's premium character.
Modified front and rear fascias help direct air flow, particularly through unique ducts that help cool the brakes. In addition, a specially designed rear deck spoiler, while refined in appearance, is also functional — increasing rear downforce by 39 percent without increasing drag.
Other unique touches to the Chrysler 300C SRT8 Touring's exterior include body-colour front and rear bumper inserts, body-colour grille insert with chrome collar, body colour mirrors and door handles, and unique SRT badging.
Two exterior colours are available: Bright Silver and Brilliant Black. The interior is offered in a Light Graystone/Dark Slate combination.
Standard interior features of the Chrysler 300C SRT8 Touring include front seats equipped with heat and memory functions, clad with performance suede inserts that secure occupants during spirited driving. Other features include an adjustable pedal cluster; `technical' leather trim on the steering wheel, shifter and door pulls; and special finishing on interior trim such as on the centre stack. Full instrumentation includes a 290 km/h (180 mph) speedometer, tachometer and temperature gauges.
Versatility and Capacity with Extended Cargo Bay
The Chrysler 300C SRT8 Touring wagon shares all the major attributes of its sedan sibling, but adds the customer benefit of a 630-litre load area which can be expanded to 1,602 litres with rear seats folded, plus easy access through the unique rear liftgate.
The body of the Chrysler 300C SRT8 Touring shares the strong structure of the sedan, but has unique rear side panels, roof and rear liftgate. The steel liftgate is shaped like an inverted "L," and the hinges are set back over the load area so that the liftgate rises almost vertically and does not require the operator to step back from the vehicle. This unique liftgate architecture also allows for enhanced access to the rear cargo area. The liftgate, fitted with a two-speed wiper and wash system for additional customer convenience, can be unlocked using the button on the key fob and opened by the centrally mounted external handle.
Both the front and rear seats of the Chrysler 300C SRT8 Touring are as spacious and comfortable as those of the Sedan — with near identical head, leg and shoulder room — but the trunk area is 25 percent larger than in the sedan when the rear seats are up. Within its competitive set, Chrysler 300C SRT8 Touring offers exceptional minimum and maximum cargo volume — more than Audi A6 Avant, BMW 5-Series Touring and Saab 9-5 Estate.
The load area features a removable, rollaway tonneau cover, large storage bins in each side panel, four cargo tie-down loops and a 12-volt power outlet. The load floor has a removable tri-fold panel that weighs just 7.25 kg (16 lbs.) and can be partially or fully folded, or completely removed. When used, small items can be stored below this floor panel. When removed, the maximum available load height is increased by 102 mm (4.0 in.). An optional cargo-management system is available, which stores below the tri-fold panel. It includes a waterproof liner and folding divider with cargo retaining nets.
Additional cargo can be carried on the optional roof bars that come with two cross bars. Roof bar load capacity is 68 kg (150 lbs.).
Safety and Security Features
Following are safety and security features available on the Chrysler 300C SRT8 Touring:
- Advanced multi-stage air bag system: Inflates with a force appropriate to the severity of the impact
- Anti-lock brake system: Electronic sensors that help prevent wheel lockup. The standard ABS system offers improved steering control under extreme braking and/or slippery conditions

Each SRT vehicle displayed by the Chrysler Group at the Geneva Motor Show showcases five key attributes: exterior styling that resonates with the brand image; race-inspired interiors; class-leading ride and handling characteristics across a broad dynamic range; benchmark braking; and standout powertrain.
Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8
All-new for 2006, the Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 — the ultimate performance SUV — is the quickest, most powerful Jeep vehicle ever made. It is powered by the 6.1-litre HEMI® V-8 producing 322 kW (432 hp) and 569 N•m (420 lb. ft.) of torque — making it quicker than the Porsche Cayenne Turbo and BMW X5 — with performance figures of 0-100 km in the low 5-second range, 0-160-0 km in the low 19-second range, and 100-0 km braking in approximately 38.1 m (125 ft.).
Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 is the first Jeep SRT vehicle, offering on-road and all-weather ability and performance with a specially developed reinforced four-wheel drive system offering highly capable performance. It will be available in Europe and other international markets in the first half of 2006.
Dodge Caliber SRT4
All-new for 2007, the five-door Dodge Caliber SRT4 brings excitement to the "hot hatch" market, with its aggressive bonnet scoop, enhanced body styling and dramatic 19-inch alloy wheels.
Caliber SRT4 will be the most powerful Caliber model, with a turbo-charged version of the 2.4-litre four-cylinder petrol "World Engine." This DOHC 16-valve power unit produces 223 kW (300 hp) and 352 N•m (260 lb. ft.) of torque. Performance figures include 0-100 km acceleration in approximately 6 seconds, the engine driving the front wheels via a special 6-speed Getrag manual gearbox with limited-slip differential. The vehicle will be available in markets outside North America in early 2007.
Chrysler 300C SRT8 Touring
Introduced in 2005, the Chrysler 300C SRT8 sedan and the all-new SRT8 Touring of 2006, are the natural evolution of the Chrysler brand, the SRT brand, and the HEMI®.
The heart of both 300C SRT8 vehicles is the larger capacity engine, which takes the HEMI® to the next level with 25 percent more power than the 5.7-litre version. The 317 kW (425 hp) normally aspirated 6.1-litre HEMI® has a 69.8 hp-per-litre rating that exceeds even that of the legendary 1966 "Street HEMI®." Torque is rated at a massive 569 N•m (420 lb. ft.).
The 300C SRT Touring arrives in Europe and other international markets in the second half of 2006.
Dodge Viper SRT10
Redesigned from the ground up in 2003 and now in its third generation, the Dodge Viper SRT10 continues to be the ultimate American sports car.
The V-10, 8.3-litre engine generates 372 kW (500 hp) and 712 N•m (525 lb. ft.) of torque — and boasting estimated performance figures of 0-100 km acceleration in approximately 4 seconds and 0-160-0 km in the low 12-second range.
All-new for 2006, the Dodge Viper Competition Coupe Coupe "tops off" the Viper lineup, and features not only a hardtop canopy, but also all-new, unique and dramatic rear-end styling, clearly differentiating it from the convertible.
Developed under the credo, "Race inspired, street legal," other Chrysler Group vehicles comprising the SRT family include Dodge Ram SRT10, Chrysler Crossfire SRT6, Dodge Magnum SRT8 and Dodge Charger SRT8.

All-new Jeep® Commander Is a Unique Blend of Capacity and Distinctive Design
- Robust, tough and luxurious — the ultimate expression of Jeep® "rugged"
- First-ever three-row Jeep accommodates up to seven passengers — theater-style "stadium" seating with panoramic Command-View TM sun roof
- Best-in-class off-road capabilities with precise and responsive on-road dynamics
- Powerful diesel V-6 and V-8 petrol powertrains
The launch of the all-new Jeep® Commander signals the ongoing Jeep product offensive scheduled for the next two years in markets outside of North America. Classic in design, Jeep Commander is the first of the Jeep family to offer standard three-row seating, accommodating up to seven passengers. The nimble, rugged 4 x 4 is engineered to perform as only Jeep vehicles can, offering more capability, more flexibility and advanced safety and security technologies that are sue to appeal to international customers.
"Jeep Commander is the first seven-passenger 4 x 4 that is as capable as it is distinctive," said Thomas Hausch, Executive Director of International Sales and Marketing – Chrysler Group. "Jeep Commander is also the only SUV in its class to offer two V-8 petrol engines, as well as a class-leading diesel V-6. In addition, Commander expands and strengthens what is already an excellent lineup, consisting of Wrangler, Cherokee and Grand Cherokee, and initiates the expansion of the Jeep vehicle lineup that will take place during the second half of this decade."
Modern Interpretation of Heritage Design With Rugged Look and a Premium Interior
The Jeep Commander's upright windscreen, backlight and rear end, as well as its more vertical body sides and side glass, embody the vehicle's classic Jeep styling. The side-view mirrors are also bold and purpose-built. Overall, Commander looks strong and confident because of its classic Jeep styling — upright and rugged. Commander engages the emotions because it is steeped in the heritage of Jeep design — integrating the past and present.
"The original Jeep Cherokee is an authentic, classic shape that is rooted in the public consciousness," said Donald A. Renkert, Senior Manager/Jeep Studio – Product Design Office, Chrysler Group. "By reinterpreting that vehicle, and other classic Jeep vehicles of the past, the Jeep Commander elicits nods of recognition from consumers, even though it is a brand new vehicle. There is a sense of deja vu about the Commander that brings knowing smiles of satisfaction. It is all-new and timeless at once."
The satisfaction continues inside the vehicle, where great attention to detail is clearly evident. From the gear shift knob, to the four round gauges in the instrument cluster, to the new steering wheel, Jeep Commander is refined and uniquely Jeep in appearance.
Newly designed seats are supportive and comfortable and, for the first time in a Jeep, there are now three rows of them. With each row slightly higher than the one in front of it, this distinctive "theatre-style" arrangement improves forward visibility for every passenger and delivers an optimal all-round view. The second- and third-row seats fold forward to create a flat load floor. Jeep Commander is only 37 mm (1.5 in.) longer than the newest Jeep Grand Cherokee, even though it accommodates its three rows of seats. Since they share the same Jeep 4 x 4 systems, powertrains and wheelbase (2780 mm/109.4 in.), Commander is just as maneuverable and off-road capable as Grand Cherokee.
The Jeep Commander's stepped roof provides second- and third-row occupants with plenty of head room. Complementing the available front-mounted sun roof is Command-View TM the new and innovative skylights (complete with shades) over the second row of seats.
The lower portion of the dashboard panel is shared with Grand Cherokee, but the top section is all-new and prominently features four pairs of circular adjustable air vents and proudly displays 16 Allen head bolts (14 are functional) that also contribute to the mechanical, constructed look of the vehicle. Both the steering wheel centre and the gear selector knob present the Jeep logo framed in a bright ring with exposed simulated Allen bolt heads to continue and enhance the overall design theme. A precise four-dial instrument cluster with LED illumination features black gauges with white graphics and red pointers for reading ease in all conditions.
Seating Seven in Style
The Jeep Commander has "theater-style" seating that enhances the functionality of its three-row, seven-passenger layout. The second-row seats are mounted 117.3 mm (4.62 in.) higher than the front row, and third row seats are 120.45 mm (4.74 in.) higher than the second row — to ensure all occupants enjoy an excellent view of the surrounding cityscape or countryside.
The second-row 40/20/40 split seats are engineered so the outer sections fold down and tumble forward to allow passengers entry or exit from the third row on either side of the vehicle. All three second-row seatbacks can be folded onto the cushions to form a flat-load area.
For maximum comfort, Jeep Commander has an available heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning system in the third row. Fully independent of the front system, it feeds warmed or cooled air to a single floor-level outlet and two circular rotating outlets on each side of the rear trim.
As well as seating seven in style, the Jeep Commander accommodates amazing space for passengers and cargo. With seven on board, there is room for 170 litres (6 cu. ft.) of luggage. Folding the third-row seats expands the cargo space to 973.5 litres (34.38 cu. ft.), and also folding the second row gives a total of 1775.6 litres (62.7 cu. ft.).
Engineered to Go Anywhere, Do Anything
Class-leading off-road capability and on-road refinement were mandatory for the Jeep Commander. So the Jeep engineering team went to the head of the class: they provided Commander with the same 4 x 4 systems, suspension and powertrains as the award-winning Jeep Grand Cherokee, including an independent front suspension and rack-and-pinion steering.
"Jeep Grand Cherokee reset the SUV benchmark with its on-road refinement, off-road mastery and overall performance in key areas of customer satisfaction," said Hausch. "Now the all-new seven-passenger Jeep Commander, with the new 3.0-litre CRD V-6 engine and a choice of two petrol V-8 engines, including the 5.7-litre HEMI® with cylinder deactivation through the Multi-displacement System (MDS), will become a compelling package for many customers in Europe and other international markets."
New Engines Deliver Performance and Power
The 3.0 CRD engine is a "next-generation" power unit from DaimlerChrysler producing class-leading levels of power and torque — giving it immense towing ability — with efficient fuel economy. Based on the latest Mercedes-Benz technology, Bosch high-pressure fuel injection (1600+ bar), a variable geometry turbocharger and four valves per cylinder, the new V-6 engine meets Euro 4 emissions standards. Additionally, the Jeep Commander's diesel emission system is equipped with a standard diesel particulate filter.
Maximum power is 160 kW (218 hp DIN) and peak torque is 510 N•m (376 lb.-ft.) from just 1600 to 2000 rpm. The accelerator pedal is modified to reduce transmission kick-downs during normal driving but still allow for full pedal travel when quicker acceleration is demanded by the driver.
For customers requiring maximum performance, the 5.7-litre HEMI® engine delivers class-leading power and torque: 240 kW (326 hp DIN) and 500 N•m (369 lb.-ft.). Ninety percent of peak torque is available over a broad rev-band (from 2400 to 5100 rpm) for excellent performance while trailer towing or travelling off-road, as well as during regular city and highway driving. To boost fuel economy, the engine is fitted with the Multi-displacement System that deactivates half the cylinders during cruising and light acceleration to increase fuel economy by up to 20 percent, depending on driving conditions.
The 4.7-litre V-8 engine was fitted with numerous improvements and refinements for its application in the new Jeep Grand Cherokee, and these are carried over to the Jeep Commander. An improved exhaust gas recirculation calibration delivers better fuel consumption, and the cast oil pan now provides better noise, vibration and harshness (NVH). Maximum power is 170 kW (231 hp DIN) at 4500 rpm, and maximum torque is 410 N•m (302 lb.-ft.) at 3600 rpm.
Two Automatic Transmissions Offer Premium Refinement
The 3.0 CRD engine is mated to a five-speed W5A580 automatic transmission that offers smooth shifts and optimum fuel economy with the diesel engine. The 5-45RFE five-speed automatic transmission used with the 5.7-litre HEMI® and 4.7-litre V-8 engines has been refined for higher-quality shifts and to maximize the Jeep Commander's towing capacity.
Both transmissions feature Electronic Range Select driver interactive shift control. The transmission provides fully automatic shifting in the "drive" position or the driver can manually select each gear sequentially by moving the shift lever left or right from the "drive" position. This gives the driver precise control to match any on-road or off-road driving conditions.
Sophisticated Suspension Provides Confident Ride and Handling
The Jeep Commander shares its suspension and running gear with the Jeep Grand Cherokee. This includes short- and long-arm front suspension that provides the driver with a greater sense of precision and control, and more precise steering, without compromising Commander's stalwart off-road performance. The tight turning diameter of 11.8 m (38.7 ft.) provides for nimble handling.
The Electronic Stability Programme (ESP), which is standard, aids the driver in severe driving maneuvers on any type of surface. ESP uses signals from sensors throughout the vehicle to determine the appropriate brake and throttle adjustments for directional stability.
Class-Leading Four-Wheel-Drive Capabilities
Two full-time four-wheel-drive systems are available on the Jeep Commander in markets outside of North America.
Quadra-Trac II® incorporates the NV 245 transfer case that provides full-time active four-wheel drive. When wheel slippage is detected, up to 100 percent of the available torque is instantly routed to the axle with the most traction. The NV 245 also includes electronic shift with a true low-range gear and neutral for towing Jeep Commander behind another vehicle.
Quadra-Drive II® is one of the most advanced four-wheel-drive transfer case systems available, providing Jeep Commander with best-in-class tractive capability. Electronic Limited Slip Differentials — front and rear — offer customers the ultimate in off-road capability. Quadra-Drive II® provides electronic engagement of torque biasing for the front axle, as well as the rear. As a result, torque transfer is faster, and almost 100 percent of the torque can be distributed to any of the four wheels, a capability that is unique to Commander and Jeep Grand Cherokee.
Unprecedented Safety and Security, Designed in From the Beginning
Like all Chrysler Group vehicles, the Jeep Commander is designed to improve not only handling and accident avoidance, but also to provide excellent crash protection. Crash protection features available on the Commander include advanced multi-stage front air bags, extended up-time supplemental side-curtain air bags for all three rows, seat belts equipped with pretensioners and digressive load limiting retractors, and BeltAlert®, a buckle-up reminder system for the driver.
Active safety features on the new Jeep Commander include standard:
- Electronic Stability Programme (ESP) with Electronic Roll Mitigation (ERM)
- Brake Assist System
- Advanced Anti-lock Brake System (ABS)
- All-speed Traction Control System (TCS)
- Tyre pressure monitor and warning signal
- ParkSense TM (front and rear park assist)
- Rain-sensitive wipers
Two Production Plants to Meet Global Demand
To meet the anticipated demand for the new Jeep Commander, two world-class facilities will be employed to build the vehicle on the same assembly lines as the Jeep Grand Cherokee. The Jefferson North Assembly Plant in Detroit, Mich. (USA) will build vehicles for primarily the North American market. Assembly for European and other world market customers will take place at the Magna Steyr manufacturing facility in Graz, Austria.
Magna Steyr
Magna Steyr is a wholly owned group of the Canada-based Magna International Inc., which ranks among the world's largest suppliers to the automotive industry. Magna International employs over 81,000 people at 223 manufacturing divisions and 56 engineering centers in 22 countries. Magna Steyr is the premier global supplier of complete vehicle engineering and assembly for original equipment manufacturer (OEM) customers. At the Magna Steyr plant in Graz, around 9,000 employees built over 227,000 vehicles in 2004.
The new Jeep Commander, in both right- and left-hand drive, is expected to reach international dealer showrooms in the first quarter of 2006.
Jeep Brand
The heroic heritage of Jeep and its dominance of the SUV market stretch back more than 65 years. Jeep is known worldwide for its core attributes of mastery, authenticity, freedom and adventure. Sales of Jeep brand vehicles outside of North America rose 15 percent year-over-year with 84,019 units sold in 2005. All three models — Wrangler, Cherokee (Liberty) and Grand Cherokee — posted gains over the prior year.
